State Initiatives

As a state-by-state initiative, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact relies on state legislatures to pass a measure joining a Compact with other states. The Compact states that once states totaling 270 Electoral Votes have passed the bill, all states that have passed the bill will allocate their Electoral Votes to the winner of the overall National Popular Vote. Essentially, once states representing the majority of Electoral Votes agree, then the President will be elected by National Popular Vote.

To date, ten states and the District of Columbia -- totaling 165 of the 270 Electoral Votes needed -- have passed the Compact.
